A Visit From Brittany Cherry.

We recently had the pleasure of Brittany Cherry visiting us from California to give some dance classes in the U.K.  Brittany is one of the stars of the T.V show “Dancing With The Stars” in America (its version of “Strictly Come Dancing”) but is probably best known in the U.K as the beautiful dancer in Ed Sheeran’s iconic  video “Thinking Out Loud”.

This video is one of the most viewed in YouTube history with around 1.8 Billion views, making Brittany the most viewed dancer on the Planet! As Freckles Ogbu declared when meeting Brittany at Pineapple: “you’re the girl in the video!”.

Brittany’s first dance class was with Janet Devenish’s students at Tring College. Janet has probably forgotten more about dance than most people will ever know (and about Tring!) but it was fascinating to watch Janet study what Brittany was doing. Brittany teaches students not only how to do the various movements but also how to interpret and “feel” the music. These lessons are interspersed with motivational quips and anecdotes to encourage the dancers to get the most out of every step. (By her own admission, Brittany is “a talker”). The students were impeccably attentive and responded to what was being offered with even more effort. One young lady reflected that it was “the best day of my life”. The class was completed with Brittany dancing a duet with the brilliant young dancer Kaine Ward (a Finalist on “Got To Dance” ).

Janet and Kaine gave us a tour of the magnificent Tring buildings, which Brittany decided was “just like Hogwarts”, and presented us with some lovely flowers.

The second class was at the world famous Pineapple Dance Studios and was aimed at professional dancers. We are very grateful to owner Debbie Moore for the use of Studio 9 and for the help of Luke and

Carly at the Studios. Again the dancers loved Brittany’s combination of instruction and encouragement and the lesson culminated in a duet with Brittany and the superb Dominic Charles, the only boy in the group!

In fact everything went so well that Carly asked Brittany to come back and teach the next day – which she did.

That was the great thing about Brittany – she was just so easy to get along with. Brittany spent a good couple of hours chatting to the dancers at Pineapple and even made plans to go out with them in the evening. Funnily enough, they forgot to invite me!

The fourth and final class was for the always talented students at the Urdang Academy. This had been arranged by Becki Compton, even though she was on holiday at the time!  After a warm up which also gauged the standard of the students, the class was again tailored for each person to get the maximum out of it. It was interesting to note that after the excited students had left, Brittany took a long moment to appreciate the beauty of the Urdang Great Hall.

We really enjoyed having Brittany to visit us for a few days. Like most people at the very top of their game, Brittany is so good at what she does that she also makes it great fun – and we had great fun!!

Top London choreographer Brendon Hansford took the opportunity to interview Brittany during her visit. This interview is really worth watching if you are looking to become a professional dancer. As Brittany advises young dancers in this interview: “know your worth”.
